Toomey Becomes Second GOP Senator To Urge Trump To Resign As Democrats Move Toward Impeachment

Topline

As the Democratic-led House of Representatives prepares articles of impeachment in the wake of President Trump’s incitement of a violent siege of the U.S. Capitol Building last week, Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) on Sunday joined Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) in calling for Trump’s resignation.

Key Facts

“At this point, with just a few days left, I think [Trump’s resignation] is the best path forward,” Toomey told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday.

Despite that, he said he is “not optimistic” that Trump’s resignation will happen “immediately.”

Toomey added that while he has already voiced his belief that Trump has committed “impeachable offenses,” he that it may not be possible to complete the impeachment process in the few days left in Trump’s term.

There are just ten days before President-elect Biden takes office on January 20, and Toomey said given the short timing and doubts about whether it is possible to impeach a president after they have left office, “there may not be a viable impeachment route at this point.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) echoed that sentiment on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, suggesting that impeachment is not the “smart move” because it “victimizes Donald Trump again,” potentially paving the way for his exoneration in the short time before he leaves office.

What To Watch For

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Sunday that the House could be prepared to vote on articles of impeachment as soon as Tuesday. Reports last week indicated that House Democrats were preparing to formally introduce impeachment proceedings on Monday, but Clyburn told CNN’s Jake Tapper that “it may be Tuesday or Wednesday before any action is taken, but I think it will be taken this week.” Clyburn added that even if the House votes to impeach this week, the chamber may delay sending the measure to the Senate in order to let the new Biden administration focus on its own agenda in its first 100 days, like confirming new Cabinet members and passing additional coronavirus relief legislation.
